My Philosophy
Music is organized sound, a powerful force that surrounds us in our everyday lives. Throughout the history of the world, music has played a role in every known civilization. For example, ancient Egyptian paintings depict pictures of musical instruments that were used thousands of years ago. Music has always been, and will always be, a part of the human experience. That is why every child must have music as part of his or her curriculum. Music educators have a duty to share the aural tradition with emerging generations. Here are the intrinsic and utilitarian reasons why every child should learn music.
Every person has an aptitude for music. Schools have a responsibility to help students try to achieve their aptitude. Music must be put in the curriculum to assist students in their progression towards achievement in music. The psychologist Howard Gardner theorized that every person has multiple intelligences which include linguistic, logical/mathematical, interpersonal, intrapersonal, kinesthetic, spatial, spiritual, naturalistic, and musical intelligences. According to Howard Gardner, “musical intelligence runs in an almost structural parallel to linguistic intelligence.”(infed.org)
Music is similar to language; however, music is a unique means of expression. People can find and show their deepest feelings through different types of music. Music class is essential in developing musical intelligence and expression.
From a utilitarian stance, not only is music included in Gardner’s intelligences, but learning and making music uses all of the intelligences in some way. For example, intrapersonal intelligence is used in music ensemble settings. Music is a community builder. When students perform in an ensemble, it brings different kinds of people together, and it unites them. Participating in music can help individuals learn to be organized, responsible, creative, astute, and sensitive.
A school music program should equip students to enjoy and understand music so it will be applicable to their lives. Students should learn to appreciate music of different genres and cultures from classical to jazz and Indonesian Gamelan to Celtic music. Also, each student must feel comfortable in using his or her singing voice so music can be another way for them to express themselves. It is important for the students to express themselves through improvisation and musical literacy.
Music is a necessity in our lives, and giving opportunities to students to gain knowledge and utilize music is essential. Music has always been, and will always be, apart of the human experience which is why every child must have music as part of their curriculum.
